We Are CiboTech
A lot of people ask us how we got our name: CiboTech Laboratories. I usually regale them with a Romance language lesson, dripping with all of the pompocity of a Cambridge-educated linguist. “Well…”Cibo” is the latin root for food, and “tech” is derived from “tekhnē” which literally refers to art or skill, but also exemplifies innovation and avant-garde direction.” That’s all true, and it’s fun to pretend to be Robert Langdon from The DaVinci Code for three seconds, but the name was truly inspired by a comic book.
Chew is a graphic novel published by Image Comics that features Tony Chu, an FDA agent who is a cibopath (pronounced “see-bo-path”). A cibopath is a person who can psychically determine an object’s complete history just by tasting it. Just by eating a bite of pineapple, Tony knows how many days of sunshine that pineapple plant received during its growing season, what kind of soil it grew in, and how many people touched the pineapple in its travels to the supermarket. How cool would that be? For most people, not that cool. For us food safety nerds, priceless!
For years, we’ve tried to communicate what we do in the lab, and for some reason, the premise of a cibopathic detective really struck a chord. At CiboTech Labs, our superpower is to take in all of the things that should not be in food and try to find out what it is and where it came from. Fortunately, we don’t have to ingest anything that comes through our doors. We have instruments and the expertise to determine the complete history of your food product and what might be in it. Let us know how we can help you!
